Orba Squara is the musical alter ego of Mitch Davis, an independent New York-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. If Davis’ name doesn’t ring a bell (yet), his artistry most certainly will: “Perfect Timing,” a track from Orba Squara’s 2007 debut, sunshyness, was featured in the first international TV campaign for the iPhone.
On the new album, Davis finds inspiration from simple things in life, like his collection of acoustic guitars, toy pianos, bells, melodicas and other instruments picked up at stores (including a sitar bought on a trip to Japan) and flea markets. Special guest, rocker Billy Squier, plays guitar and sings on a few songs on the album including the title track and “Tell Me” which Davis wrote with Squier’s vocal style in mind. After a fortuitous meeting backstage, Davis handed his childhood hero a copy of sunshyness and the two started collaborating.
